Top 3 Things to Consider Before Starting a Detox

Prior to starting any form of cleanse or detox, I always encourage people to do their research. It is important to have a good understanding of what you are putting into your body and what the outcome will be. Too often people grab the prettiest looking box on the shelf without really knowing if it’s right for them.

I had the chance to speak with Edwin Shendelman, a manager of one of the largest health food stores in Bloor West village, Supplements Plus. I asked Edwin:

WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE STARTING A DETOX?

1. CLARIFY YOUR INTENTION

Ask yourself: what are your goals or expectations in doing a detox? Do you want to support your general health or prevent illness? Or are you looking to positively impact an existing health condition? This is important to clarify as short-term occasional detoxing is ideal for those looking to support general health or prevent illness. However, detoxing to aid in alleviating a particular health condition may require a longer period of time, as well as supervision by your Naturopath or other Health-Care Provider.

2. INFORM YOURSELF

You may have heard that detoxing is good for you, but before you begin, make sure to inform yourself about what committing to a detox program can involve. In addition to reading books or consulting with on-line resources, your Naturopathic Doctor, Health-Care Provider or knowledgeable staff at your local supplement store can help you navigate the wide variety of choices and help you find a program suited to your individual needs. If there are specific health concerns that you think a detox program may address, you should seek further clarification about them.

3. READY, SET, START MAKING CHANGES NOW!

Diet and lifestyle changes can greatly improve the outcome of any detox program. Eliminating junk food, stimulants such as caffeine, refined and high-sugar foods, while embracing a diet high in whole grains, fresh or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables is recommended. Personal self-care, such as getting adequate rest and sleep, and frequent meditation will contribute to your overall well-being while detoxing. Get excited now about the positive changes a detox can bring to your life!
